Our blog contains some great advice for people embarking on a new career or finding the perfect job. But, knowing what you want from a career can only take you part of the way. You will need to look at your behaviors and the way you are with people.
There may be some things that need to change if you want success in the world of work. In today’s guide, we’re going to reveal some of the bad habits that you should try and lose if you are serious about having a long and lasting career. Let’s take a closer look.
Tunnel Vision
If you are the type of person that only looks out for yourself and judges everything on your success alone, it’s time to reassess the way you do things. Yes, the business world is full of ruthless people. But if you can’t work as a good team member and don’t understand that your success is also down to the people you work with, you are more likely to fail. You’ll get a name for yourself alright – but for all the wrong reasons.
Complaining
If you find yourself complaining a lot at work, don’t expect a promotion soon. Business owners don’t need people to point out problems – they need you to solve them. It’s easy to point out what is going wrong, but it takes far more to create solutions. So, watch out how much you moan and complain, and only do so if you have the answer to those complaints already.
Big Mouth
Loose talk has ended the career of cleverer people than you. Passing on trade secrets, gossiping, making up stories – they can all end with you in serious trouble. Again, you will pick up a name for yourself as someone that cannot be trusted.
Drinking Too Much
Alcohol is a great ice breaker, but too much will have you sinking beneath that ice with no hope of finding an escape route. It’s going to affect you in two ways. First of all, alcohol will affect your performance, make you behave inappropriately, and give you a bad reputation. Secondly, it can easily lead to making poor decisions, such as driving under the influence. If you are caught, the most important choice is choosing the attorney who handles your DUI. It could be the difference between ruining your career and simply suffering a big wake up call.
Arrogance
Arrogance can take you a long way – but it can also ruin your career if you can’t temper it. You will antagonize a lot of people, and unless you have serious skills to back up your claims, you will soon get found out.
Laziness
Employers like people who work hard – they see those that only do enough as time wasters. And they will, most definitely, notice. Make sure you put your all into your job if you want a successful career. It’s the only way you will make quick progress.
We all have our faults, of course. But, unless you are prepared to acknowledge yours and do something about them, you will be lucky to have the successful career you wish for. Good luck – and lose those bad habits!
